“Patchwork” ~ Georges Noël, 1967.
Mixed-media on canvas, 146 x 114 cms.
Georges Noël was born, appropriately, on Christmas Day the 25th December 1924 at Béziers, (d.2010 in Paris). He was originally a draughtsman-designer for an aerospace company, but in 1956 went to Paris and devoted himself entirely to painting. He ws passionate about Jean Dubuffet, Paul Klee, Jackson Pollock, and the Italians such as Piero Manzoni and Lucio Fontana.
Attracted by design and writing, he produced a media which characterized his work: a mixture of pure pigments, sand and glue which resulted a raw, grainy or smooth, surface according to the purpose of the artist. This material lent itself to his writings, and his vocabulary of signs – mysterious and magical – bore the imprint of his fascination with archaic cultures. The term “Palimpsest” that he liked, expressed in his eyes “the overlay and clearing successive layers of pictorial material, direction, time, and signs.” Georges Noël’s painting shows a certain evolution over his fifty-year career; the artist drew much also, and his works on paper show the same spontaneous and fanciful writing. A tireless worker, he did also sculpture, reliefs and prints (especially from wood engraving).
Represented by the Galerie Paul Facchetti upon his arrival in Paris, for sixty years Georges Noël exhibited frequently in Europe and the United States. In 1968, he moved to New York where he was represented by the Pace Gallery and the Gallery Arnold Herstand. On returning to France in 1983 he prepared a major exhibition to the Abbey of Senanques, and in 1985 a retrospective at the National Arts Centre. He also exhibited in Italy, Germany and Japan where his work is especially appreciated. His last Parisian exhibitions were held in the Tessa Herold Gallery in 2008 and 2010. A prolific artist, his work is also in private and public collections around the world.
